Join the Newman Institute for Catholic Thought & Culture and UNL Newman Center’s Outdoor Ministry for a Fall Break retreat in Kansas. Hike the Konza Trail. Mass and Adoration at beautiful St. Isidore’s in Manhattahan, KS. Camping under the stars. Make pilgrimage to the hometown of Venerable Emil Kapaun.

What is it?

A four-day trek in the Flint Hills of Kansas with prayer, hiking, Mass, stargazing, and other opportunities for bodily, mental, and spiritual recreation in the wonders of God’s creation.

Where are we going?

We will be camping in the Flint Hills near Manhattan, KS. Excursions beyond the Manhattan include Pilsen, the Tall Grass Prairie, and historic Lawrence.

Since we are camping, what gear do I need to bring?

Besides your own clothing and boots, the only gear that you are responsible for bringing is a sleeping bag. If you don’t have a sleeping bag, you can rent one from UNL. It will be cold at night; pack appropriately.

Who can go?

This trip is for undergraduates currently enrolled at UNL and other area colleges or universities. Spots are limited.

When will you be going?

We will depart from Lincoln early on Saturday, October 17 and arrive back in Lincoln midday Tuesday, October 20.

How much does it cost?

The Newman Institute partly covers the trip. We do ask students to make a contribution of $150 towards the cost of the trip. $50 of this is reservation deposit due before October 1, 2026. The remaining $100 is due before October 15, 2026. Payments can be made online via link once your application is approved, or by cash/check to the Newman Institute, 320 N. 16th St., Lincoln, NE 68508.

Due to the limited number of spots and the nature of some of the activities involved on the trip, applications are limited and reviewed. Your spot is not considered fully reserved until you have received an approval of your application and the Institute has received your reservation deposit.
