For-Credit Courses

These 3-credit classes have no prerequisites and are designed to be taken in any order. A discounted tuition rate of $295 (or $170 for auditors) is available for students who are registered with UNL Newman Center. Please designate this in your application and we will be in touch with details.

Course Calendar: For-credit courses for Spring 2026 begin Monday, January 12th. We follow the UNL Academic Calendar for all breaks and major points in the semester.

Credit Transfer: Accredited through St. Gregory the Great Seminary, these courses may be transferred to other undergraduate institutions. For UNL students, a course equivalency has been established for elective credit. With advisor approval, they may also meet ACE (often ACE 5 or 8) and other requirements. Upon completion of the course, students will need to request a credit transfer from St. Gregory the Great Seminary.

 
 

HUM 269 - Crisis and Identity: The Making of the Modern World

Meeting: Tue. & Thur., 7:30-8:45pm, UNL Newman Center, Room 222

Credit Hours: 3

Course Description: This course looks at the great questions and ideas raised in the late Renaissance to today from a multi-disciplinary approach. We explore the interplay between literature, history, philosophy, art, and theology inside and between the various cultures of the time and their relevance to today’s world. No prerequisites.

Certificate in Catholic Thought: This course satisfies 3 of the Core credit hours necessary to complete our Certificate in Catholic Thought.

 

THEO 431 - An Introduction to the Symbolic Worldview of the Church Fathers

Meeting: Mon. & Wed. 4:00-5:15pm, UNL Newman Center, Room 222

Instructor: Fr. James Morin, St. Gregory the Great Seminary

Credit Hours: 3

Course Description: After providing a historical and theological overview of the Patristic period, this course will introduce students to the categories and symbols through which the Church Fathers conceptualized the world and the story of salvation. Students will gain familiarity with Patristic approaches to Scriptural texts (with particular attention to Genesis and Exodus) and with ancient hagiography (which builds on similar patterns. Class discussions will attempt to show how ancient modes of thought provide insight into the problem of truth and meaning in today’s modern and post-modern world.

These one-a-week classes are free and open to all students at UNL and area colleges and universities. There are no prerequisites, homework, or exams. Come as you are and join us for a conversation about the things that matter.

Catholicism 101

Discover the truths of the Catholic faith as they are found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. This class runs over the course of 4 semesters, each time diving into one of the 4 pillars of the Catechism. Hop in at any point to dive into the mysteries of our faith in a way that will help you pray more deeply and love Jesus more wholeheartedly.

Catholic Literature, History & Saints

Catholic Literature, History, & Saints has been a staple at the Newman Center and a student favorite for years. With no homework or required reading, the class will help you develop an authentic Catholic worldview through contact with the saints, popes, Church Fathers, Doctors of the Church, and everyone from Dante and G.K. Chesterton to Flannery O’Connor and J.R.R. Tolkien.  If you want to create a lifetime reading list and learn about purgatory, glorified bodies, and uprooting the 7 deadly sins, this class is for you!

Bible Basics

Whether you don’t know anything about the Bible or have led your own Bible studies, this class will take you deeper in pursuit of the Word of God. Unearth the plot points of the entire Bible, get a taste of all the genres found in Scripture, and learn the nuts and bolts of essentials like interpretation, prayer with Scripture, dealing with difficulties in the Bible, why Catholic Bibles have more books than Protestant ones, and what’s up with the “gnostic gospels” and the details of the book of Revelation.
